The spellers are getting better; that much is certain. Some of them have watched YouTube videos of past Anatolia bees, and they had sharpened their skills in the in-class bees used to select the 20 finalists, two from each section of 1^st form English. The result was that it proved so difficult to dislodge them from the raised stage of Tsipos Hall on May 10^th that the Bee wasn’t decided until the bell for class had rung. When it was all over, Panagiotis Mistakidis had taken 1^st place (he had no trouble with “definitely,” “mosquito,” and “Massachusetts”), Elina Konstantinidou was in 2^nd (she nailed “hippopotamus”), and Eri Marioglou was in 3^rd (having spelled “exercise” correctly, among other words). English teacher Helen Hondropoulos served as the Queen Bee, calling out the words and providing example sentences to illustrate their meaning – and doing her best to keep the audience of the spellers’ classmates calm!
